History of Trade in Ancient Mali
The Trans-Saharan Trade linked to the Mediterranean economies that demanded gold and could supply salt to Sub-Saharan economies, where gold was rich. Mali rulers did not encourage gold producers to convert to Islam because production of the metal traditionally depended on a number of beliefs and practices that were alien to Islam. Cowrie shells were introduced from the eastern coast, however, gold and salt remained as the long-distance trade.
